Does optimal egg size vary with demographic stage because of a physiological constraint ?

چکیده

1. Optimal egg size theory predicts that females should produce propagules of a size and number that maximize maternal fitness. However, studies of the allocation of resources to eggs have rarely provided evidence of such optimization. This is presumably because of constraints that limit reproductive allocation. One such example is that of pelvic aperture morphology constraining egg size in turtles. 2. Growing evidence suggests that even this classic example is incomplete. Hormones that regulate both the reproductive cycle and vitellogenic activity in turtles may provide a novel physiological mechanism for control of egg size. 3. This physiological constraint hypothesis was explored by examining the relationship between maternally derived yolk hormones and egg mass in the Painted Turtle ( Chrysemys picta , Schneider). 4. Eggs from younger females contained significantly more testosterone in the yolk than did eggs from older females. Younger females laid eggs nearly 20% smaller than those of older females even where body sizes overlapped. 5. Elevated testosterone levels in younger females may thus constrain egg size physiologically, beyond the well-known physical constraints imposed by pelvic aperture morphology. The endocrine system may play an important but previously unrecognized role in the evolution of egg size in this model system.

Optimal Trajectory Study of a Small Size Waverider and Wing-Body Reentry Vehicle at Suborbital Entry Speed of Approximately 4 km/s with Dynamic Pressure and Heat Rate Constraint

A numerical trajectory optimization study of two types of lifting-entry reentry vehicle has been presented at low suborbital speed of 4.113 km/s and -15 degree entry angle. These orbital speeds are typical of medium range ballistic missile with ballistic range of approximately 2000 km at optimum burnout angle of approximately 41 degree for maximum ballistic range. A lifting reentry greatly enha...

An improved genetic algorithm for multidimensional optimization of precedence-constrained production planning and scheduling

Integration of production planning and scheduling is a class of problems commonly found in manufacturing industry. This class of problems associated with precedence constraint has been previously modeled and optimized by the authors, in which, it requires a multidimensional optimization at the same time: what to make, how many to make, where to make and the order to make. It is a combinatorial,...

The evolution of offspring size across life-history stages.

Females vary in the size of offspring that they produce, often in a manner that depends on maternal age or stage. This is puzzling, given that offspring size is predicted to evolve to a single optimal value where the gain in fitness from being larger exactly offsets the fitness lost to the mother by producing fewer offspring. We used a stage-structured life-history model to determine the optima...

Application of a Gene-Based Population Dynamics Model to the Optimal Egg Size Problem: Why Do Bivalve Planktotrophic Eggs Vary in Size?

The presumption is that egg quality influences larval survival and that egg size influences egg quality. Thus, larger eggs should be favored by selection. Counterweighing the tendency for egg size to increase is the number of eggs that can be produced if egg size remains small. We examine how egg size and egg number counterbalance in Crassostrea oysters, resulting in an average egg size near 50...

Evidence for the morphological constraint hypothesis and optimal offspring size theory in the Mexican mud turtle (Kinosternon integrum).

Optimal offspring size theory states that natural selection should balance reproductive output by optimizing between offspring size and offspring number. If a species has evolved an optimal offspring size, the fitness of larger females should be increased by simply producing more offspring of an optimum size. In contrast, when offspring size is not optimized, the morphological constraint hypoth...
